First market for this mini-pickup, of course, are the USA. From its beginnings, Toyota is already more a truck than a
car supplier and has never neglected this division. Precursor of the first Hilux generation are the 'Toyoped Truck' and the
'Toyota Stout'.
The second generation begins restrained with a short and a long version, but then especially for the United States with the above
specified 20R engine of the Celica including optional five-speed gearbox.
Only from this model on the Hilux is available in Europe. Now it can be changed over in addition to the diesel engine mentioned
above also with the all-wheel drive of the Land Cruiser to 4WD.
As VW Taro the Hilux comes to Germany. The
engines getting bigger, especially in USA with the first V6 (see below).
The five-seater is introduced with this fifth generation as two- and four door version (XtraCab / DoubleCab). In between, there is
even a version as a tipper.
Equipped with more space and all the necessary electronics, such as ABS and airbags. Finally the above
indicated powerful diesel engine and all this for a modest base price.
Once again grown significantly and authoritative, it is available in Europe only with diesel engines. One of these is deliverable in
Germany (again indicated above). Otherwise, it now contains in addition to the freehub a
Torsen differential and low range gearing. 05/16
