Intro1989

We present this 911 model in Speedster look. It differs from the Carrera/Turbo convertible by the lower windscreen, two humps on the roof box and the emergency roof. The model reminds of the early, very successful Speedster models. Supposedly 2000 911 Speedsters have been sold.

Those are completely wrong who believe this has been it for 1989 in regard to innovations. For the first time there is the 4WD in the rear-wheel-driven 911, i.e. a shaft/hollow shaft combination from the transfer case at the front gearbox exit to the front axle. A multiple-disc clutch allows variable front/rear torque distribution.

This drive concept changes the vehicle almost in the complete lower car body area. Besides a slightly smaller tank,it includes a completely new chassis and the turning away from Ferdinand Porsches's beloved torsion bars. They are replaced by helical springs which happens by and by to nearly all other cars from this era. 01/09
