The philosophy has remained for 25 years. In a time when all sorts of meaningful and meaningless as test objects are pushed onto the market, Mazda maintains the fundamental principles at the MX5. One can forgive it even the little slip-up towards the folding roof.

The focus is now entirely justified directed back to a reduction of the weight. That was exactly the core idea: Almost sitting on the rear axle with a not too large engine being able to flit nimbly around the corners. After all, one has resisted the early urge to more cylinders.



However, one could already still formulate requirements for a new model. Perhaps it is still possible to enlarge even the luggage space in the roadster and nevertheless reduce the weight at the same time. Even though one speaks of 100 kg less at the moment, but the are still waiting for the verification.

Impermissible comparison with Honda S2000

Since there is such a fabulous Skyactive powerplant with 121 kW (165 HP). When that will find its way into the MX5 body? Therewith the Mazda 3 has approximately 20 percent less CO2. In the lighter four meter roadster the value could be even slightly undercut. At this opportunity the body could need some fine tuning, for example, 194 km/h with 93 kW (126 HP) are not exactly outstanding.



Not that one now wants to drive with this car with full speed through the area, but perhaps the measures outlined strengthen the by Mazda so much desired unity between driver and vehicle. One could also call it pleasure without regrets, whereby one then enhances free time and possibly individual liberty.



The MX5, also called 'Miata', has in the United States almost more fans than in Europe. For its 25th birthday, therefore, to the American market come 100 vehicles with very carefully balanced engine parts, new colours and special leather applications in the interior. In addition, the above mentioned wider tyres, aluminum pedals and for the manual transmission versions harder damper.

In the U.S., only with two-liter engine . . .

The MX 5 has incidentally 6 gears in the U.S. and the opportunity to be ordered with an automatic with the same number of gears. The two-liter then has with automatic transmission about 6 kW (8 HP) less, however, already at 6,700 rpm. One already announced the successor with SKYACTIV technology (pictured below) and about 100 kg less weight for this year, perhaps with even a slightly more favourable weight distribution. 04/14

The relatively complex, built high rear axle remains.
