There is hardly a car brand with so many technical nuances like the company Lancia. Although not a requirement, the associated body shapes also appear accordingly numerous. And yet somehow one suspects Lancia, even if the type plate is not visible. An art case of so many variants, but probably also due to the Italian way of body construction.

In the case of the Flaminia Coupé, grand old man Pininfarina was involved and he shall have driven such up to his death. The designation as 'most beautiful car in the world' seems somewhat exaggerated, because Pininfarina has created really enough other masterpieces. But what has made attractive this coupé?

The first charm was probably that this car looked very normal from the front, even a little high instead of wide. The car differed not really of the saloon car including air scoop in the bonnet. But to the rear this optical roof extension attracted attention. Interesting design with just a few stylistic elements. And so it was in the view angle from the front finally yet a special car.

Lancia drivers are individualists, willingly also paired with a certain capacity for suffering. No, because of the purchase price they usually suffer less because the they know before buying. By the way, it has reduced by more than DM 5,000 from the previous model to this, despite a more powerful engine. No, they were suffering because of possible quality defects.

After all, you got for that money nearly a fine Mercedes coupé at that time and did not have to be annoyed by bad fitted body parts, listen to the wind instead the engine on the highway and accept a steering without support for a car with front six-cylinder. The Daimler-seats are also better.

And yet the Haute-Volée at least partially drove Lancia Flaminia. Maybe was the small number of vehicles sold just here a selling point. And still more everyday benefits as a lot of space despite less wheelbase in the coupé and a wonderfully powerful V6, just increased by 300 cc and now without the show of two tailpipes.

An early transaxle ...

The Mercedes had also no comparable axle, swung still a little constant at camber through curves. Well, case of Lancia it was a leaf-sprung rigid axle, but just in DeDion version with double cardan shafts and axle drive at the car floor. And as icing on the 'i' the transmission, rearranged for better counterbalancing to the rear.

Everything was better in the past, really?

As said, there is almost nothing in the automotive sector that is not to find in any Lancia. Interestingly, the stated consumption values from 15 up to 17 litres of fuel to 100 km, which are even still increasable by driving at full throttle. Also the 1.5 liter engine oil per 1,000 km range in large limits. The former could happen perhaps also with a Mercedes, the latter probably not. 04/15
