The abbreviation 'KTM' was first for 'Kraftfahrzeuge Trunkenpolz Mattighofen'. Later the name was 'K' then 'Kronreif' for a commercial shareholder. The company exists since 1934 and was founded by Horst Trunkenpolz in Upper Austria. Off road motorcycles are the domain of KTM, early with its own two-stroke engine and later a liquid-cooled four-stroke (figure). KTM has made important achievements e.g. several times won in the Paris-Dakar Rally. The supermoto versions also had appropriate riding qualities. KTM exists after a bankruptcy as a separable part of a business operation.
