Hyundai Ioniq

It is not correct to characterize the Prius as a model for the Hyundai Ioniq. Outwardly here and there a small design gimmick may be alike, but not later than in the interior you will discover the difference. One point is that the Hyundai is styled more conservatively. Please judge by comparison with the Toyota.

Although Hyundai point out the low center of gravity by special arrangement of the battery, the Prius convinces with significant more luggage capacity with folded rear seat backrests, even if you consider the slightly larger car length. Last similarity: the relative similar capacities of the two batteries (Hyundai 1.56 kW).

Toyota is still sticking to the battery based on nickel-metal hydride, while Hyundai relies on the widespread lithium-ion technology. The Hyundai engine seems to work with its performance hardly after Toyota preferred Miller cycle.

It is a performance orientated 1.6-liter direct injection engine with more power despite a smaller displacement. The Hyundai has a double-clutch transmission, whereas Toyota works without any kind of gear changing systems. It will be interesting if the management of Hyundai can so significantly undercut the price of the Toyota as announced.

Given the hoods made of aluminum and of a relatively little elaborate rear axle that would be a sensation. Especially when the 'dumping' would also extend to the Ioniq with electric drive (250 km range) and a little later the plug-in hybrid.

Nevertheless, the better approach is clearly at Toyota, because electric motor and combustion engine are trimmed to a refined interplay. The differences between the fuel consumption are small according to manufacturer's indications. Even if driven slowly, the difference between the two cars will increase. 02/16
