Basically, the transporter is not one of the most talented all-wheel vehicles. Nevertheless, we see here a pragmatic solution of the Ford Transit, to order as all-wheel with all wheelbases. This makes sense for the manufacturer, because it changes only the short piece cardan shaft up to the center bearing (Figure 3 below). These are three views of the lightweight, rear pressed steel frame and the driven rear axle. With the frame connects it only a leaf spring. It is probably made of steel, although slowly prevail considerably lighter from GRP. Amazing that such a thin stabilizer with its rod connection to the frame has an effect at a still relatively heavy transporter. Easy to reach, the readjustment for the parking brake (picture 1 above). From below the cables of the parking brake end in the cab directly to the mounted handbrake lever. It could hardly be easier. Looking up front, reveals the symmetry of the bulkhead and the carrier of the dashboard. It is prepared for both right- and left-hand drive. Now we finally come to the all-wheel drive. Advantageous that the engine is arranged so far to the front. You see the connection from the front axle drive in the direction of travel left by the clutch housing to the right front wheel. Amazing short distances from the transfer gearbox to the front. The additional weight is only approx. 65 kg. All-wheel and rear-wheel drive also have the same turning circle, what with driven front wheels is by no means the rule. However, the overall transmission ratio is significantly higher, probably to compensate the lack of off-road gear something. Disadvantage of this is a 20% higher CO2 value and correspondingly higher consumption. 11/14
