1965 Fiat 241

The front-wheel drive was probably not expected to carry a payload of more than 1,000 kg. The risk of the front wheels spinning helplessly on a slippery road on a mountain with a load was too great. So one went back to where one came from. The wheelbase has even been reduced somewhat.

Underneath, the 241 looked almost like our 124 S back then. Even the engine matched, albeit in favor of higher torque and running on regular petrol (51 hp) rather than premium (70 hp). Only the suspension of the rear axle had to give way, leaf springs for simplification and a significantly higher payload were announced.

With the longitudinal engine in the middle, the 241 becomes a two-seater.

Above that it became unusual, because the vehicle could be had with a low loading floor and two inner fenders pulled forward as well as with a smooth-surfaced, but higher box floor. In general, the car looked like a truck from behind.

A box that could be mounted at the back took the cake, as if you were dealing with a shipping container. Typical of this was the strong vertical ribbing, only two wing doors at the rear and 140 kg more curb weight. But at least 8 m3 of cargo could fit inside.

According to brochures and visible in the video above, the Fiat 241 was not offered as a normal panel van. From the 1970s it was also available with a 1.9 liter diesel engine.
