The sister model is the Pontiac Firebird and they both competed against the Ford Mustung, who has been produced since two years and bought by thousands of buyers, 22000 at the first day of sale. From its name then the class of the Pony Cars is derived, which includes from now on Camaro and Firebird. They also come with six and eight cylinders, 3.8 to 5.7 liters displacement.

With only 4.7 meters in length the Camaro actually filled a gap between the large models Biscayne, Bel Air, Impala and Caprice on one side and the Corvette on the other. Contrary to the Corvette it allowed the placement of more than two people. In addition, the engines of the Corvette were more powerful even with the same displacement. The Chevelle was somewhat larger. Although the dimensions of the Chevy II were of the same size, it was offered much cheaper.

The first Camaro clearly had the more powerful engines, was therefore basically a good motorised car, but by American standards not too big and offered for a moderate price. This in turn corresponded to the Ford Mustang. Its wheelbase was slightly increased only. The Chevrolet Camaro was available as coupe, but as convertible in the first series only. In addition to the two-step automatic a manual transmission with three speed was avaibale, column- or floor-mounted shifted.

The Z28 equipment, at first little advertised and publicized, contained four-speed manual gearbox, 4.9-liter V8 with 216 kW (294 hp SAE) at 5800 rpm and disc brakes in front. This car was designed for touring car races in USA. There were still Rallye- and Super Sport variations, the latter with 5.7 to 6.5-liter V8, 220-280 kW (295-375 hp SAE). 01/16
