1973

A certain milestone in the development of the motorcycle was this R 90 S. Not so much because of the 49 kW (67 HP) at for motorcycles tame 6500 rpm, but because of the involvement of external designers for the first time, which leads to almost foolhardy results just in the recent BMW motorcycle development. As proof, one may see the picture (below) of an intermediate station, the K 40 of 1995.

1975

The BMWs of those years of construction will famous because the dashboard is oriented toward the driver's seat, large more than the small.

1975

One has long hesitated, the 02 series to replace by a new model. Now came the 03, from 1977 even with extra tiny six-cylinders.

Here the popular 316 with 1.6 liter displacement and 66 kW (90 HP), after all, good for 160 km/h. During the complete first series the 3 series remained two-door.

1976

One talks of Le Mans and Formula 1 successes, but the most successful is the for the formula 2 in the history of BMW racing engines. As naturally aspirated engine with 2 liter displacement, it brought 232 kW (315 hp) and will be produced thousands of times and won three times the title of European Champion in the 320 Group 5.

1977

This was the first car in the 7-series, the E 23. It was not the first time in the history of the automobile and also at BMW that a corresponding Coupe (6 series) first (a year earlier), went into production. Also the 745 i was not directly to order but until three years later, just as the ABS one year earlier. For the smaller models, the model designations 728, 730 and 732 were still correct, because they really showed the displacement.

1978

One year after the E21 series the 323i came out. Imagine a 1200-kg car with the little six-cylinder and 105 kW (143 HP). Since from time to time you had to fear for the traction at a rear-wheel drive.

1979

There are many BMWs which have been designed new in terms of colour by well-known artists. From this altered by Andy Warhol M1 Group 4 is said to be currently the most valuable. Standing in front of the car, then you would not have the idea that art comes from ability. Though there was obviously also a scaled-down model for practice, Warhol's work performed relatively coarse, with several cans of paint and a brush like a tassel. The best part of the whole action is the text that explains this relatively rough work wonderfully chosen words. Here then is however to see again a certain art.

1980

In a way, this car was a compromise. A 'real' upper class engine was not (yet) available. Therefore the existing has to accept one for this time and such a model unusual turbo treatment. 1983, the displacement will be increased again, which then resulted in nearly 3.5 liter 185 kW (252 HP). Interestingly, BMW gave the model the designation '745 ' what actually pointed to a 4.5-liter engine.

1983

This it is, the suitable engine for the F1 success. Amazing for such an engine the hull was made of cast iron but obviously in this case, the material was more suitable for the enormous boost pressures the of the engine exacted in the course of time. BMW indicated that for short periods were possible 809 kW (1000 HP) at for racing engines human-sounding 11,000 rpm.

1983

'BMW Brabham BT 52' is called the winning car. Its engine block came from the BMW 1500, the displacement is the same in any case. The performance was given with 500 kW (680 hp) to 581 kW (790 HP), already at the time good for 320 km/h depending on transmission ratio.

1983

The Museum in Munich points to the first use of telemetry measurements. This means that the box receives during the race data and possibly can change settings. Together with the telemetry the digital engine management find its way into racing sport and a little later in the series.

1983

A very successful year for BMW. Barely a year there, one won with Nelson Piquet the F1 World Championship. It was above all the turbo-charging, with the BMW seemed to deal better than the competition at this time. Thereby e.g. the qualifying engine was inflated with up to 5 bar.

1984

This was not only a representative of the 5-series, he had for BMW unusual saving qualities. We forget so easily that there were once or twice crises, the designers brought to reduce fuel consumption. Here is a 525 eta with 2.7 liter engine and for the time and the car class unusual 8.3 litres/100km.

1987

Not exactly typical BMW was the dashboard of this extraordinary sports car with 2.5 liters displacement, 125 kW (170 hp) and 225 km/h top speed.

1987

Here is a look inside with on demand 10 centimeters more legroom back. One traveled very comfortable with the 4-liter V12 and 220 kW (300 HP), if necessary, up to (down-regulated) 250 km/h fast.

1987

The entry in the upper class was yet not enough for BMW. One wanted to get the V12 crown as the first German company the realized such a project after the war. Technically one had good conditions because it was possible to take much of the inline six-cylinder engine. But seen from the potential buyers BMW risked quite a lot, but was ultimately successful and the other manufacturers followed.

1987

The first buyers of this limited edition of 8000 pieces received their car until almost two years after the presentation at the Frankfurt Motor Show. But after that they owned a cult object. Retractable instead of hinged doors together with plastic body are directly visible external marks. Of the special zinc plating of the chassis and the modified rear axle was seen less. 07/13
