The 1800 might be considered a contribution to the consolidation of the brand BMW. The 1500 is the first model of the 'new class', establishing the brand BMW in this class. Consequently, it is possible to push through more particular vehicles in the same outfit. The easiest method is an enlargement of the cubic capacity which clearly brings more power and also slightly more peak capacity.
The company BMW becomes more self-confident. BMW has been accused of offering only cars for either the rich or the poor; countering this accusation, the middle class is presented in various new variations. 'Only the best solutions in designing the car are accepted' may be read in the sales prospectus. Therefore, it is impossible to offer a 'cheap' car. The accountants stepped back while designing the car, leaving the field to the engineers.
BMW stresses besides the new chassis also the engine. However, it is astonishing to read that a maximum speed of 160 km/h and an acceleration time of 13, 2 seconds from 0 - 100 km/h are described as values which are purely for safety reasons, and range beyond the normal operation of a car.
One of the safety features of the car is its brake system. Of course BMW is also proud of the rear independent suspension, featuring always some negative camber which prevents the car from tipping over. As a contrast, you may remember Mercedes models of that time. Still, the price of the car in terms of its size is steep. For sure, the boot fulfils all demands.
The beauty of the extraordinary car body is praised. The 'plain', almost exclusively function-related design is stressed. BMW points out that this car has won several beauty prices. The chrome plated reclining seat fittings are noteworthy. They provide same sparkle to the still relatively simply formed seats with stitched cloth in the middle and imitation leather at the sides.
A tachometer is not part of the package. But the three instrument gauges with chrome rings outside and to the edge stronger tinted covers are high grade and provide a breath of luxury. Worth mentioning is also the automatic windscreen wiper, which might be activated without moving the hands from the steering wheel. Common is a rubber-foot pump with metal ring as a switch for the windshield wipers. Electric motors are still relatively expensive, and, therefore, seldom.
An important aspect is obvious from the data on top. Also the middle class BMW takes part in racing events, because it boosts the urgently required sales figures. Like later on the 2 liters engine, the 1800 is also tuned. Instead of the small Solex dual carburetors much larger Weber carburetors are installed. Indeed, together with the biting camshaft the initial drive is not easier, but there is a huge increase in numbers of rotation with a suitable increase in performance. The data shown on top are just those of the sales version.
