It takes some time for the Audi 60/75/90 to win again the confidence, that was lost by its predecessors with two-stroke engine. Although it has a lot of good qualities. So it is inside nearly bigger than outside, making him to both, city and touring car. Now it has a forceful and in no way too thirsty engine. One has a good overview in it. Only with the smooth-running steering of the front- wheeler are some problems concerning the feedback and the insulation can be a little stronger, even if the excellent suspension comfort suffers a little bit.
The F 102 is the last DKW. To emphasize the four-stroke technology of the successor and to come away from the two-stroke DKW image, this is called Audi. Even a former member of the Auto Union and as middle-sized class exclusively equipped with four-strokes egines. Nevertheless, internal the continuous model designation F 103 is dialed. This emphasizes that the rest of the car remains in principle, what do honour to the construction of DKW.
The engine should somehow be derived from an order of Daimler Benz for the German army. It still enters new territory, although the term 'medium-pressure engine' is a plenty of overstatement. Because a compression of about 11: 1 is not the half on the way to the diesel engine. But it is worth noting, what here is achieved with twist channels and for the time really high compression, engine performance and efficiency at the same time. The engine has features you miss at the Mercedes-own engines.
You should really examine it more closely, but we now state again that this engine in modified form at least 30 years live on in the VAG Group. It is the inclined built-in motor, that later with adjacent cooler is fit in the Passat and as cross-engine in the Golf. Sure, the camshaft is displaced in the cylinder head and driven by toothed belts, but their old case is still to find in the cylinder block. A multi-purpose shaft for distributor/oil- and vacuum pump, etc. turns here.
If Mercedes had known, that even one day from this would develop the competition in the diesel sector and with the sale of Audi to VW a powerful competitor. And if one had just before the year 2000 explained to Golf drivers, their engine actually come from the pen of the Mercedes constructor Ludwig Kraus ....
