Nowadays the purchase price may not seem very shocking, but at that time a Volkswagen Beetle was roughly one third the price. A Mercedes ranged in the same price category as the Alfa, offering more space and quality, indeed, but worse road performance. Alfa lives of its fame and increases its sales numbers only slowly. It seems as if up to then unattainable dreams were possible all of a sudden. The brand has always lived very strongly on emotions.
