Rear Suspension - rear-wheel drive

The percentage of rear-wheel driven cars has decreased in the last years. This does not hold true for upper class cars. It is important that the drive axle is connected to a sub-frame, which is partly visible in the picture above. In the center, there is the driving shaft. From below, the wheel is led by a powerful wishbone with indents for the springs and the vibration damper. Above, a slimmer one has been used. Completely down there is the sturdy trailing link, which is additionally crosswise secured.

The usage of sheet steel and especially cast iron shows that the vehicle is somewhat dated already. Just for the linkage of the stabilizer some aluminum is used. Modern wheel suspensions make much more use of aluminum or light alloys, to reduce the non-spring-mounted masses.
