Glass 3 - Prepare Insertion Window

Adhesion surfaces

With non-bonded windows any remaining window rubber can normally be removed easily. Otherwise, remaining glue leftovers must be removed with special knives. (figure 4) Whereby, careful attention is to be paid to avoid possible damage to the paintwork of the car body. Should however, damage occur, the customer must be consulted to agree on suitable measures to be taken. Because scratches can not be completely avoided, even with the proper removal of glue, all the places worked on with the knife are painted over with primer before installation of the new window.(figure 2) After all, there is a long guarantee on the water tightness which could be ruined by rust very quickly. The preparation of the car body for the window installation is complete when all adhesion surfaces are cleaned, e.g., with a window cleaner and are pre-treated with an activator. This provides for the flawless connection (adhesive forces) between the old- and the new glue.

Checking the new window

The preparation of new windows begins with their delivery. Before the delivery person may leave, the windows must be cleaned and the absence of scratches or even fractures must be confirmed. The responsibility now lies with the garage. This is not the case with, e.g., night deliveries in external, lockable containers. In this case it is advisable however, that first thing in the morning the windows are basically and essentially checked by at least two people, to avoid possible complaints. By the way, light impact damages to the outside are occasionally accepted. In this case one can prevent possible cracking by sanding.

Preparing the window

The window is normally, except for the edges, almost ready for the installation. This includes e.g., the position for the sticking on/clamping on of the inside rear-view mirror. Recently, apart from possible windscreen heating also a rain sensor may be present. Sometimes the area set aside for the silk screen printing of the chassis number needs a little attention. The clean window has, on the edge, rubbers with or without terminal strips. In some vehicles these must still be inserted in the window frame after the installation of the window. Once the window has been treated with activator, (figure 1) the large, electrically controlled gluing machine is, very carefully, put to use. (figure 3) Using this, a fairly acute, slightly outward directed sticky strip is put down. Should the process have to be interrupted, reworking with a suitable small spatula is necessary. 08/08
