Five Cylinder V-Engine

Function

The five-cylinder in-line V-engine is better suitable for transverse mounting because it is shorter than the corresponding in-line engine, and, nevertheless, because it has just one cylinder head hardly more expensive compared to a real V engine.

How it works

The single cylinders are arranged slightly staggered in one cylinder block. This is only possible because the centre line of the cylinders at the outside runs past the crankshaft middle. No specific axially offset of the pistons is possible. Moreover, the length of the channels to the valves varies. In spite of the relative narrowness in the cylinder head this engine is also combined with two camshafts and four valves per cylinder. 05/08
