The centrifugal clutch served earlier in the semiautomatic car (without clutch pedal) as a starting clutch. In certain series of the Citroen 2 CV it was combined with a separation clutch and the gear box. In a traffic jam you just needed to touch the accelerator pedal and leave alone the clutch pedal. Today it is still prominent for two-wheel vehicles (see picture 2) and in particular with scooters. The principle is very easy. The centrifugal forces of the centrifugal weights establish the pressure force for the friction surfaces.
How it works
The connection between engine and gearbox is established or another gear is switched if the crankshaft reaches a certain number of revs. The second picture on top shows two shoes with coatings that are fastened only on one side rotate able to a disc and are held by springs. From a certain number of disc revs on, the centrifugal force of the respective shoe overcomes the spring tension, swings outwardly and takes the drum along. The clutch engages.
Important
The centrifugal clutch requires for switching gears with a gearbox shifting clutch. 06/08
