Limited Slip Differential (electronic)

The system is also sometimes called Traction Control System.

The electronic limited slip differential, or traction control system, should, up to a certain speed, brake the specific wheel which is spinning when pulling off, and through the differential direct the initiated torque to the other driven wheel.

Particularly in the case of the electronic accelerator pedal, the deployment of the electronic limited slip differential is often combined with a reduction of the engine-torque. Whatever the case may be, with EDS (TCS-traction control system) one does not need to be overly cautious with the accelerator pedal when pulling off under critical road conditions.

Together with the development of the ABS-control, the electronic limited slip differential also becomes possible. If the brake pedal, is not operated, for the control device recognisable through the brake-light switch, and the RPM difference between the driving wheels exceeds a pre-determined value, EDS (TCS) provides, by means of an additional hydraulic pump, pressure through a magnetic valve, which is conducted to the faster turning wheel, which is then braked. Electronic limited slip differentials are also suited for all- wheel-drive vehicles on mild terrain. With heavier demands the brakes can overheat.

Please disable the system when driving
with snow-chains.

To maintain driving stability, it can be of advantage, in some cases, first of all, or in addition, to reduce the engine torque. Thereby, there are, depending on the desired response time, various intervention possibilities. The slowest one is the reduction of the throttle valve (EGas). Through the ignition angle, the reaction is much faster. The time following the interruption of the fuel injection, is dependent on the process. Indirect and advanced delivery of fuel delays the quick reduction of the engine torque. With the interruption of the ignition, the interruption of the injection must also occur anyway.
