Steam Carriage

This vapour carriage comes from 1854. She weighs 3 tonnes and carries in the rear part a steam engine which drives more than two cylinders and a crank mechanism directly the rear axle. The designer is the Italian Virginio Bordino, to an officer of the 'royal engineers'. Without horses the carriage is quick to max. 8 km/h and uses approx. 30 kg of coal per hour. With defect or missing coal still horses can be clamped in front.

From the twenties years of the 19th century vehicles on tracks and on ways start to compete with each other. An unequal fight because on ways accidents are far more frequent and cause with vapour vehicle by the explosion of the boiler additional damages. Although, therefore, regulates, e.g., in Great Britain strongly, the steam drive still some time remains a competition for the later arising motor vehicle with internal combustion. Steam engine and electric drive remain competitive till the beginning of the 20th century, e.g., with running. Both have reached speeds more than 200 km/h in the course of her career. 09/08
