Brake Test Stand (analysis)

Function

The peak of the braking force and especially the distribution amongst the wheels provide important information about the performance of the brake system. If something needs attention it will often become evident with this relatively simple test. Some test stands measure the weight of the axle additionally, or it is possible to type it in. In this case, the retardation can be measured.

How it works

The engine drive of the rollers is started when the axle is put on the rollers. The brakes are enforced slowly, or the hand brake cable is fastened with increasing force. The scales show the forces at the single wheels. If the friction between the wheel and the rollers reaches a pre-determined value, the engine drive is stopped. The display freezes. If the test stand is computer equipped, the percentage difference between left and right per axle is calculated (see the picture). For the brake pedal it should not be more than 20% difference, for the hand brake it should not exceed 50%.

Important

Vehicles with a permanent all wheel drive, or with a various torque distribution between front and rear might have to make use of a different brake test stand.
