Brake Test Stand

Plate brake roller test stands are considered obsolete.

On the brake roller test stand the braking power at the wheel circumference is measured. It serves as a proof on the well functioning of the equipment. Formerly, it was common to use plate brake test stands. You approached the plate brake test stand at a certain speed, braking on the test stand. The deflection of the plates was measured against the spring tension in brake direction. Today rolling test benches are common.

Two independent roll sets with three phase ac motors

Two roll sets, one for the right, one for the left side of the car, independently of each other, take up the wheels of an axis. Both rolls of a roll set (drive and overrun roll) are connected to an electrical drive via chains. One roll set forms a unity together with its engine and the reduction gear, and is flexibly mounted in circumferential direction. It drives the wheels with approx. 5 km/h (see figure 2).

Sensor roller switches system on/off, rev comparison

The system is activated by the sensor roller, located in between the roller set, when the wheel pushes it down. The speed of the two rollers remains constant throughout, just the sensor roller moves with the wheel. Comparing the revs of the sensor roller with that of the drive roller, the system can switch off the engine if otherwise too much slip between wheel and roll would corrupt the measurement data.

Roll set swings against bending bar with measuring strip

Figure 4 shows it. The roll set (red) moves around its axis of rotation. During the brake process it is turned into the direction of the blue arrow, having an effect on the bending bar with measuring strip (green). The resistance of the measuring strip is evaluated electrically and indicated as a force in Newton.

The check on a brake roller test stand refers to the momentary state of the brake. It does not provide any information about the durability, e.g., of the brake disks or coatings.
