Hydraulic Systems 10

The project is so interesting because of its many aspects. It is based on a Mercedes Arocs with the axis designation 8x6/4, thus a four-axle vehicle with 3 drive and two steering axles. By the way, front is driven the first of the two steered axles. The truck will brought to the Custom Tailored Truck Center to Molsheim. This is a French branch of the Daimler-Benz AG, founded in 1970 , which now makes remodelling at trucks.

It is by the way really in Molsheim (Alsace), while the world-famous Bugatti factory is located 'only' in the suburb Dorlisheim. The Daimler-workshop gives the Arocs a lengthening and partially reinforcement of the frame and a fifth, steerable air-sprung axle. The designation 10x6/6 expresses the new situation shortened.

Now the company Palfinger comes into play and builds on the obtained area a loading crane. The is so heavy that the fifth 9-ton axle was needed to avoid in Baden-Wuerttemberg with 48 tonnes gross vehicle weight, the special individual authorization for road use and thus considerable costs. Case of such a crane usually the kerb weight is also the permissible total weight.

There are in the Mercedes duty vehicles still diesel engines with larger displacement and thus more powerful, but this here is with 375 kW (510 hp) the most powerful with 12.8 litres cubic capacity. Also for the cab, the smaller was choosen with 2,300 mm width. The wheelbase between the first and last is only 4,550 mm with a turning circle of 22,600 mm despite the many axles. This is important for its required manoeuvrability on specific construction sites (see video).

The crane uses completely the maximum permissible height of the vehicle of 4 metres. It basically consists of three, folded into one another arms (articulated arms) by joints, which fits just with work basket in this state on the remaining area of the chassis. In addition, part 2 and three are once more from eight telescopically interconnected arms in lightweight construction.

Have a look at the so resulting incredible reach on the pictures above. A height of almost 50 metres is possible. To allow sufficient lateral deflection, there are each two jibs left and right and one front and rear. The lateral supports are approximately 11 metres far away from each other at full utilization.

In the football stadium of VfB Stuttgart, the crane had the task, to help with the maintenance and cleaning of the LED scoreboards. By the way, the weigh each 11 tons, are 17.12 metres wide and 7.22 metres high. The 115 square metres of screen area is equipped with over 600,000 LEDs. Such kind of work is possible with the vehicle in halls also, since the hydraulics can then be driven by a 400 volt electric motor connectable to the high power current supply. 10/15
