  Construction site vehicles 6

It was only in the 1960s, that the mobile concrete mixers slowly started to assert themselves. Although they do have a higher tare, they bring the concrete at the appointed time and exactly to the place where it's needed. Sometimes they are supported by an additional vehicle with a concrete pump, even though this has to have a complex piping system.

The first examples of this type of vehicle had separate motors for the drum, they were very high and of course, had a dangerously high point of gravity. The materials to be mixed are fed in through a non-closable opening. Because there are spirally placed metal-plates welded to the inside of the drum, the mixture is extracted again simply by reversing the rotation direction.

Going back to the already mentioned auxiliary motor, there is the alterative of a direct output. In this case, the engine torque does not go to the gearbox through the clutch and then, e.g., to the hydraulic pump, but is directly branched off in the extended clutch housing from the crankshaft or from the flywheel. The auxiliary output can also be used while driving, e.g., with a drum which has to permanently rotate.

Easier assignments than the transporting of a drum filled with freshly mixed concrete are also possible with a camshaft-drive. Some sort of regulation is needed, to ensure that the rotation speed stays independent from the engine RPM. At least due to the lack of an additional motor, the drum can be mounted substantially lower. By the way, the drum is not filled with the individual ingredients, but mostly with the finished mixture.

Those who are responsible for such a vehicle, which by the way, is not exactly cheap, needs the large water tank on board, not only to produce the correct material consistency, but when the day's work has been done, all the components must be freed from concrete that has stuck to the parts. Non-stick coatings can help, but sometimes only hard knocks with a hammer can do the job. What the driver does with his load, if he can't get rid of it at the construction site because it's closed, we'll leave to your imagination ... 11/14
