Three small electrical circuits show different types of relays.

Make contact element (left side)
In starting position the control circuit is open. If the switch is turned on and connects the positive pole of the power source to the relay, the second circuit is closed.

Break contact element (middle)
In starting position the control circuit is closed. If the switch is turned on and connects the positive pole of the power source to the relay, the second circuit is opened.

Changeover contact element (right side)
In starting position the control circuit is open, the circuit to the right lamp is closed and the circuit to the left lamp is opened. If the switch is turned on and connects the positive pole of the power source to the relay, the circuit to the right lamp is opened and the circuit to the left lamp is closed.
