Sectional Repair

Requirements for the body

The body of the car should exhibit a number of features: it should be highly stable, yet light, and offer a lot of space, yet still have good aerodynamics. In case of an accident some parts of the body are supposed to take on energy by deforming, others should remain stable. In addition it should resist corrosion and be easy repairable.

Requirements

A body originates from a production line and should be able to regain its features after an accident without very costly reparation to keep the insurance premium low. One possibility is the sectional repair.

What to do

First one should identify the cuts, mark them out, and separate the parts. Then the new part should be marked out too, and fit in. The seam should be deburred, and the seam range should be polished brightly. In this phase it is important to pay attention for good corrosion protection. The new part has to be set, fixed and then welded. Finally the seam range has to sharpened brightly and washed-out. If one has filed away the remnants, the repaired place can be prepared for the lacquer finish.

Characteristics

With full-galvanized sheet metals, high temperatures are to be avoided. Therefore one should remove the undercoating protection and sealing materials only with a rotary wire brush or with hot air equipment. Working on priming and lacquer material requires using lacquer remover or the plastic brush. For the separation one uses the spot weld milling cutter or the body saw. To connect the parts one should predominantly use the electric resistance welding procedure.
